About the Schroon River

Lake George Riverview Campground is located along the beautiful Schroon River. State-designated as a recreational river, the Schroon is a 68-mile-long tributary of the Hudson River, perfect for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, tubing and fishing.

Paddler’s Paradise

The calm waters and scenic views along the Schroon River are ideal for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Unlike many of the neighboring lakes and rivers, you won’t have to contend with powerboats or jet skis, and several large embankments offer views of wildlife, including herons and otters. Bring your own watercraft, or take advantage of the kayak and canoe rentals right here at Lake George Riverview Campground

Whitewater Adventures

Although our section of the Schroon River is flatwater, several stretches offer exhilarating whitewater paddling. Rapids range from Class II to III when water levels are low, to Class IV in the spring when water levels are at their highest. A popular seven-mile section south of Starbuckville Dam ends with “The Big Drop”, which is reserved for experienced whitewater paddlers with proper gear.

Lazy River Tubing

The Schroon River is a popular destination for swimming and lazy river tubing. Bring your own inflatables and drop in at our natural sand beach or rent tubes by the day or hour right here at Lake George Riverview Campground. The river’s calm currents, sweeping bends, and scenic surroundings provide families with a fun and relaxing way to spend a hot summer’s day.

Fishing

Trout anglers will find some of the Southern Adirondack’s most productive fishing in the Schroon River. Each spring, the Department of Environmental Conservation stocks the river with rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout, and the river’s cool waters are teeming with largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, perch and landlocked-salmon. Fly fishing is also popular during the caddis fly hatches in May and June.

Camping on the Schroon River

Our Schroon River campsites allow you to camp riverside beneath the tall majestic pines. Choose from tent, popup and trailer sites on the river, or our extra-large riverfront RV sites, and enjoy all the Schroon River has to offer. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fireplace or fire ring, electric, water and cable. Full hookup sites are available on or off of the water, as well as 50 amp pull thru sites. Kayak, canoe and tube rentals are available by the day or hour.
